Behind the Music

I prepped like crazy for the White Stripes concert, listening to every song from all six albums. This should have guaranteed a solid grade because almost every time, the more songs I know, the more I enjoy the concert. Another thing in the concert’s favor was the fact that I was going with two big White Stripes fans, Tom Kinslow and Luis Vila. The fact that Tom and Luis were probably the most unlikely pairing in the history of the world should have made the experience that much more enjoyable. But, alas, the night at Madison Square Garden has to be called...




A Big Disappointment

The best things about the White Stripes are their funky guitar riffs and Jack White's scratchy, idiosyncratic phrasing. Both of those elements were lost in the concert. The guitar feedback was so damn LOUD that all the riffs sounded like indiscriminate thrashing. And instead of the usual quirky phrasing, there was a consistent mumble. The whole thing was like a movie whose background music drowns out both the dialogue AND the soundtrack. That being said, the concert was...





Not A Total Loss

The crowd was huge, "
Hotel Yorba" was a blast, and Jack White had a great ad-libbed line: "I don't think we've played this bar before."

Overall, though, I prefer headphones.
